Mainz, the "Gutenberg City"
Johannes Gutenberg is undeniably the most famous son of the City of Mainz. With the invention of printing books using movable letters, he laid the foundations for modern media communications. His outstanding importance is acknowledged worldwide: "Time-Life", the well-known American magazine selected Gutenberg's invention in 1997 as the most significant discovery of the past millennium. In late 1998, American journalists then made Gutenberg the most important personality of the second millennium, by calling him the "Man of the Millennium" in their book "1000 Years - 1000 People". In the year 2000, the people of Mainz and their guests celebrated the 600th anniversary of the birthday of this outstanding inventor for two months.

Gutenberg belongs to Mainz like Mozart does to Salzburg. An excursion tracing Gutenberg's steps is, of course, the nicest way to get to know Mainz when visiting our city. The world museum of the printing arts, namely the Gutenberg-Museum, is an absolute must. You can trace the footsteps of our Man of the Millennium and his life virtually under Gutenberg.de. Those wanting to try out the art of printing will find everything that they need at the printing shop of the Gutenberg-Museum.
